What to do / What not to do when arrested

What to DO when you get arrested:

It is a stressful experience to be stopped or arrested by the police.  You must protect yourself and your rights as best you can.  Despite any feelings of anger or frustration you may feel, it is in your best interest to try to avoid conflict with the officer and obey his/her commands.
Remember these 5 steps:

  1. Be polite and stay calm.
  2. Give your name and address to the officer –SAY NOTHING ELSE.
  3. Remember (write down) the Officer’s name and badge number.
  4. DO NOT RESIST ARREST (never touch an officer).
  5. Ask for a lawyer as soon as you are arrested.  Do not speak to the police without a lawyer present.

What NOT to do when you get arrested:

Remember these 5 Don’ts:

  1. Don’t be combative, disrespectful or violent with the Officer
  2. Don’t try to work out a deal with the police on your own without an attorney present
  3. Don’t answer any questions without an attorney present
  4. Don’t give permission to the police to search your home, car, or person WITHOUT a warrant
  5. Don’t try to convince the Officer that you’re innocent
